Good Mental Health

22 April 2021

We all have mental health and it is as important as our physical health. When our mental health is good, we feel emotionally well, able to look after ourselves and able to engage with the things that we care about.

When we struggle with our mental health, we can feel overwhelmed and unable to cope, which can make it difficult to manage our daily lives.

There are lots of ways in which spending time with nature can be positive for our mental health and wellbeing. The reasons why time with nature have this effect on us are complex and are still being understood. The benefits are often related to how our senses connect us to the environment around us, from the shapes we see in nature to the scents that trees give off and the soft fascination that nature can stimulate which helps our minds rest.

When with nature, people may experience a more positive mood and better cognitive function. Memory improves, as does the ability to focus. Some people also experience a boost in creativity.

If you’re wanting to make the most of your garden but find it hard to visualise this then think about any improvements you can make, such as extending/adding a patio area. You may have an area in your garden that is currently overgrown and needs clearing, you could add a patio/hard standing area away from the house where it is more quiet to enable meditation or reading. Encourage the wildlife to join you in your new refreshed green space by installing an irrigation system to bring your garden back to life and thrive in the summer months.

One way of creating an outdoor area to help with promoting a healthier lifestyle is to create an outdoor space such as a garden room, home gym, home office, games room or even an art studio.
